Hard drives contain several strong magnets that interact with a wire coil on the actuator arm. As the coil is electrified, the arm moves the heads across the surface of the disk. As a took apart one drive, I unraveled the wire coil to reveal its true length.

And it looks like 1/3 of it is still unravelled!
