Mexican Coca-Cola

  • March 30, 2007
Look what I found huddled in the back of my fridge! Aren't they cute? They're scared because I already drank one of their buddies. It was mm-mm-good.

So supposedly Coke bottled in Mexico is made with cane sugar, which contains sucrose. Also supposedly, sucrose isn't as bad for you as high fructose corn syrup, which is the main ingredient in practically every soft drink you can buy in most of the US. I bought this Coke on Amazon.com to see if I could taste the difference, but I honestly don't think I can. Unfortunately, the ingredient label is a sticker affixed somewhat haphazardly on each bottle, rather than being printed on the glass like the rest of the label. Since it says "high fructose corn syrup and/or sucrose", I will have to figure out another way to find out.

Also, it's clear that these bottles are directly recycled, as they all have old copyrights on the glass label but new expiration dates in ink on the neck. I was originally worried to find bottles that looked so old in the package I received, but I soon figured out the trick. Anyway, it's good stuff, as glass-bottled Coke always is. It's best served right on the verge of freezing.

Actually, since it is passover on Monday night, just go to Kroger and get the yellow capped coke. It uses sucrose instead of high-fructose corn syrup. There was plenty left at Toco Hill Kroger, and it's open 24 hours.
