Scott Adams Sells Out, Again

  • January 10, 2006
Not content to simply build an empire of merchandising around his comic strip, Adams finally decided to sell out artistically as well, giving Dilbert a mouth for Fortune magazine. Adams commented in his 7-year anniversary book that it was often hard to convey emotion when the main character had Popup Imageno mouth (a problem that plagues only a few of the characters), but he always stuck to that. I'm guessing there was some arguing between Adams and someone who didn't think he could make Dilbert sufficiently "happy" without the glaring grin, but in the end it was either add the grin, or don't get the magazine cover. Since Dilbert has been steadily declining lately, Adams was forced to sell out. That's my theory at least. Oh well.

He looks so dumb with that mouth. It really bugs me when people sell out...Jim Davis (Garfield) is another big example. Do you know that he doesn't even draw his own comics anymore?

I didn't know Garfield comics were still being made. I've never seen a Dilbert cartoon which must be a sin at Tech. I like lamp.

It's a reference to Anchorman (booo, I couldn't stand that movie). I say Dilbert is much better than Anchorman--even sellout Garfield is much better than Anchorman. ;o)
