The Birds

  • January 4, 2006
These guys flocked around the apartment as I took photos, moving as a group from the ground to a tree, to the ground, over the apartment, to the ground, to the tree again, etc. Eventually, along with a bunch of robins and finches, they completely removed every berry from the tree in our back yard, which was previously covered with them.

Farewell to Jennifer, who leaves again for California this afternoon.

For the past few days, I've been trying to raise awareness of the WMF bug that was recently discovered in Windows. This affects all Windows users, not just those who use WMF files occasionally. If you run Windows, you should seriously consider applying this patch, developed by a well-respected developer who has taken the baton dropped by Microsoft. Microsoft, on the other hand, says that they will release a patch next week. If you don't plan to do anything on the internet until next Tuesday, feel free to ignore this warning. However, all you have to do is visit one site with a malformed WMF file and you can be infected with whatever spyware that site wants you to "have". Get the patch and be safe! For the wary, you can see that ZDNet has endorsed this third party patch.

Update: I've removed links to the third-party patch because MS has released an official patch a bit early. If you have previously installed the third-party patch, you can (and should) uninstall it after applying the MS update. If you have not installed either, make sure you get the MS patch as soon as possible!
