The Sun is Too Bright

Christine sleeps through Bravo's West Wing marathon.

After 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining proved to me that Kubrick could actually make a decent film. I don't want to hear anything about the amazingness of 2001 because statements like that make me want to barf. 2001 is slow, droning, and boring, excepting the half-hour interaction with HAL. The Shining, on the other hand, definitely ranks among my favorite films. The music, which now rings a bit cliche, contributed immensely to maintaining the film's fear while "normal" scenes were occurring, as well as amplifying it during actual horror scenes. The opening helicopter chase was beautifully executed. I was somewhat bummed that we saw the blood exit the elevator so early in the film, though, as I thought that was one of the cooler effects that could have been saved until the end when it actually occurred. I already knew the high points in the story after seeing Simpsons Treehouse of Horror V many times, which mirrors the movie almost perfectly as "The Shinning". Hearing Simpsons references in my mind, along with the audience laughing at obvious plot points like "I can assure you that [going crazy] won't happen to me", just made the whole film more dynamic.

Yes, 2001 is slow, droning and boring - exactly what being in space would feel like. :)

great picture, just a little too much space on the right after her foot. I know you probably included her foot intentionally, but you could have shifted a little more to the right so you can capture her whole body but get less of the wall. You know?
